The “Divine Abode: Eklingji Temple, Udaipur”

Ancient Origins: The temple complex is believed to have been founded by the Guhila dynasty rulers in the 8th century. The Guhilas were the rulers of the Mewar region, with Udaipur as their capital.

Reconstruction by Bappa Rawal: According to legend, the original temple was destroyed by a devastating attack, and it was later reconstructed by Bappa Rawal, the founder of the Mewar kingdom, in the 8th century. He was a devout follower of Lord Shiva and wanted to establish a significant temple dedicated to him.

Sisodia Dynasty Patronage: The temple received patronage from the Sisodia dynasty, who succeeded the Guhilas in ruling Mewar. Various rulers of the Sisodia dynasty, including Maharana Raimal and Maharana Sangram Singh, made significant contributions to the temple’s development and maintenance over the centuries.

Architectural Additions: The temple complex underwent several architectural additions and renovations during different periods. Maharana Kumbha (1433-1468) and Maharana Rana Jagat Singh (1628-1652) made notable contributions to the temple’s architecture, expanding and beautifying it.

Iconic Four-Faced Idol: The main attraction of the Eklingji Temple is the four-faced black marble idol of Lord Shiva, known as Eklingji. It is believed to have been installed around 1,500 years ago. The idol represents Lord Shiva in his various aspects—Surya (the Sun), Brahma (the Creator), Vishnu (the Preserver), and Rudra (the Destroyer).

Spiritual Significance: The temple holds immense spiritual significance for the people of Udaipur and devotees of Lord Shiva. It is considered one of the principal temples of the Mewar region and an important pilgrimage site for Shiva devotees.
